POEM - At The Fram

AT THE FARM

Just below my bedroom window

Clang
the calves
at the feeder
another youngen fed
pulls back

In the side yard
the chickens chattering
scratch the ground

Today
the last of the corn harvest

Excited
standing in the flatbed wagon
rumbling through the fields
the grain’s in the silo
with cobs in the bin

The workers gather
the dried stalks
livestock fodder

Scythes in men’s hands
breath visible
level the cold brown field
piling the wagon high

The slow up and down
as the progress goes
bringing the last
of the season’s crop
to provision

  2. Happened. I was very small, and it was the only time I remember Dad helping on the farm. The clang sound woke me that morning.
